Rob in trouble with NYPD over his security... or lack thereof?

So, according to Irish Central (random, right?) the NYPD aren't happy with Dr. Phil and co. (a.k.a. Rob's security):

Sources in the New York City Police Department have told IrishCentral that the "security situation" with "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson has gotten "out of control," and cops are planning on assuming more-stringent control over the young actor's security when he is in town.

"Enough is enough," said a highly-placed official at Police Headquarters. "His security people aren't up to the task of keeping him safe, and they have no idea how to deal with the crowds this guy attracts." The source pointed to a well-publicized incident in which Pattinson ran from a crowd of admirers and was slightly injured when he was struck by a taxi.

"That's amateur hour," the police spokesman said. "We have celebrities a lot bigger than this guy who can come and go in perfect safety because we know how to take the right precautions. We have presidents and kings come and go. This poor kid can't get in or out of a car without things getting dangerous."

The police source confirmed what Irish Central has been told by other members of the department — that "Pattinson's people" want to be in full charge of the actor, his travels through the city, the sets used for various shoots, and all security matters involved. But it seems that they underestimated fans' rabid interest in the handsome star, who has complained that fans get close enough to tousle his hair and grab his clothing.

Pattinson himself is reportedly very troubled by the close proximity to fans in which he must work, and has complained that they are able to find what hotels he stays at and what restaurants he dines in.

Police said they were particularly concerned about the so-called "Twiheads" — fans who have so completely embraced the vampire theme of "Twilight," and who have confronted the actor asking for his blood and even cut themselves so they can bleed for him. [<---um, what?!]

The Department has long experience in the protection of the hundreds of recognizable celebrities who live and work in the city, and while the Mayor's Office has a special and well-regarded film and motion-picture office and works to coordinate the needs of a studio with the demands of public safety, the police have ultimate responsibility for keeping the peace.

Apparently, they believe it's time they reminded the Summit Entertainment security staffers who is in charge before a weird fan encounter turns into something more serious.

Now, I'll confess, I was in NYC a few weeks back and couldn't resist taking a peak at the set... the first day was a little busy but, hey they were filming at NYU, who do you expect?

The second, and last, time I went (it was my birthday, who wouldn't?!) it was totally mellow (see my non crazy/stalker/fan-girl posts from both days for yourself over at my mini-blog) and never did I see anyone grab, scream, freak-out (although I'll admit this can happen - see below) at most people said "Hi Rob" if he walked by.

The biggest problem doesn't seem to be Dr. Phil (who's a total sweet-heart), sure, part of the matter could be the fans - atleast the crazies (like Grabbery-Stoopid-McGrabberson up there) but not the majority of us who are compliant and respectful.

But my vote goes to those mismanaging his publicity - whoever was "leaking" locations every effing day of filming, which ended up on Perez - doy!

Seriously people *deep breath* remember... Jasper says RELAX!

Thanks to my boyfriend, who text me with this story today because he thinks I'm crazy enough to be one of the grabbers: Not. True.

But yeah...it is kinda crazytastic...and I do feel for RP. In truth...I feel like all sets should be closed to the public...regardless of the star power.

  6. ok i don't really like rpattz, but if somebody isn't going to do anything about his protection then he could get shot and the twilight saga will be ruined, and then who will we all turn to to blame? Summit? The police? Or overly, crazy, obsessed fans? And also to make a comment on those people who cut themselves and bleed for rob i just have to say, "What the Heck Is Wrong With You People?!" He is just some british dude who plays Edward in a movie chill out my god!!

  7. ugh, lame. get the kid some better security. he should be able to walk in and out of his hotel and in and out of a restaurant without being hassled or screamed at.

honestly, the rabid fandom makes me embarrassed, so much so that if i was in close proximity to him, i wouldn't approach him or say anything to him. it's not worth it anymore, because he gets hounded everywhere he goes, and even though i'm not participating in the hounding, i still feel guilty about it.

    laaame!

  11. Do you think it can be more the paparrazzi then the fans that are the issue with being obnoxious?

  12. I would be surprised if the NYPD actually came up with security for Pattinson, as Rob is a mere actor. It is up to Summit and himself. Actually, I am fearful for his safety. Just because the stalkers are 'girls' doesn't mean there are no really dangerous knifewielders among them. I know that Rob and Kristen have both voiced concerns about this. So don't blow this issue off as a minor blog filler.

  13. Fans like that are what ruin it for the rest of us. I'm embarassed - Rob and Kristen are pretty much AFRAID of their fans because of those psychos.

  14. Someone beefed up his security a while ago, but I don't think it was enough. Seriously, who could imagine these maniacal young women throwing themselves, and pawing at this young actor.
    This is not acceptable.

I also have to wonder about the self esteem of young women/girls that would behave in such a manner. Being a fan is one thing, behaving this way is something totally different.
